Water has impurities in it, there are two types of impurities, they are soluble impurities and insoluble impurities. Insoluble impurities such as mud, stone, twigs, etc, are the ones that do not dissolve in water and can be seen through our naked eyes. These impurities can be removed by the following methods:

Sedimentation: The process by which heavy insoluble impurities present in the water get settled down. The impurities that settle at the bottom are called sediments.

Decantation: This method involves the separating of clear water from the sediment. The clear water on the top is called decant. The decant is then poured into another container and the sediments are separated.

Filtration: This method involves the separating of insoluble impurities using a filter like a thin cloth, a strainer, or filter paper. Very fine pieces of solid impurities can be removed in this method.
