Find the (i) boiling point and (ii) freezing point of a solution containing $0.520 g$ glucose $(C_{6} H_{12} O_{6})$ dissolved in $80.2 g$ of water. For water, $K_{f} = 1.86 K / m$ and $K_{b} = 0.52 K / m$ .

Accepted Answer

Normal boiling point of water $= 100 ° C = 373 K$

Normal freezing point of the water $= 0.0 ° C = 273 K$

Mass of glucose $= 0.52 g$

Molar mass of the glucose $(C_{6} H_{12} O_{6}) = 108 g / mol$

Mass of water $= 80.2 g = \frac{80.2}{1000} kg$

Elevation of boiling point, $∆ T_{b} = \frac{K_{b} n_{2}}{w_{1}}$

$∆ T_{b} = \frac{K_{b} (\frac{w_{2}}{M_{2}})}{w_{1}}$

$∆ T_{b} = \frac{0.52 \times 0.52}{180 \times (\frac{80.2}{1000})} K = 0.019 K = 0.02 K$

So, Boiling point of the solution $= (373 + 0.02) K = 373.02 K$

Similarly, Depression of freezing point $∆ T_{f} = \frac{K_{f} (\frac{w_{2}}{M_{2}})}{w_{1}}$

$∆ T_{f} = \frac{1.86 \times 0.52}{180 \times (\frac{80.2}{1000})} K = 0.067 K$

So, Freezing point of solution $= (273 K - 0.067 K) = 272.93 K$
