1-(g) Amoeba is a single-celled organism found in pond water. When it senses food, it pushes out pseudopodia around the food particle and engulfs it. The food becomes trapped in a food vacuole. Digestive juices are secreted into the food vacuole. They act on the food and break it down into simpler substances. Gradually the digested food is absorbed. The undigested food is expelled outside by the vacuole. 2-(f) Ruminants are herbivorous mammals like cow, goat, buffalo, etc. that are able to acquire nutrients from plant-based food by fermenting it in a specialized stomach prior to digestion, principally through microbial actions. Ruminant stomachs have four compartments: the rumen, the reticulum, the omasum and the abomasum. Rumination is a process in which the grass-eating animals bring the previously consumed food into the mouth once again and chew it. 3-(a) The stomach is a muscular bag lying in the upper abdomen. The stomach secretes the digestive juice called as gastric juice. Gastric juice is a unique combination of hydrochloric acid (HCl), lipase, and pepsin. Its main function is to inactivate swallowed microorganisms, thereby inhibiting infectious agents from reaching the intestine. 4-(b) Bile juice is secreted from the liver which is contained in the gall bladder which is then used to aid the digestion process of fats in the small intestine. 5-(e) Digestion begins in the mouth, where the ingestion takes place and is completed in the small intestine. The villi present in the small intestine increases the surface area so that the absorption of food takes place faster. 6-(h) The large intestine is the portion of the digestive system most responsible for absorption of water and vitamins from the indigestible residue of food. 7-(d) The rectum stores the undigested food material or faeces which is removed from the body through the anus by the process of defecation. 8-(c) Salivary glands produce saliva which is mixed up with food to help in the movement of food through the oesophagus and aid digestion process.
