Frictional force plays an important role in our daily life. In some cases, friction is useful, and we want to keep it but in other cases, friction is harmful, and we wish to reduce it.

Advantages of friction:

Friction enables us to walk without slipping.

Friction helps us to hold things in our hands.

A matchstick lights up due to the heat produced by friction between the head of the matchstick and the lighting surface of a matchbox.

Disadvantages of friction:

Wear and tear: The soles of our shoes and tyres of vehicles wear out due to friction. It also causes wear and tear in the moving parts of machines.

Friction produces heat: When a machine is operated, heat generated causes wastage of energy.

Friction is responsible for the unnecessary production of noise in many machines.

So friction is both necessary and evil. That's why it is often called a necessary evil.
Note: Friction acts in the direction opposite to the direction of the motion of object.
