Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh are blessed with varied kinds of soils attributing to their varied kind of climatic conditions and temperature. The river valleys are dominant with alluvial soil, brown forest soil and mountainous soil.

1. Alluvial soil: The Jammu plains are predominating covered with alluvial soil. This alluvial soil in Jammu has two variants:

a. Old alluvial (Bhangar): This lies above the banks of river and are usually free from floods.

b. New alluvial (Khaddar): This kind of soil are frequently inundated as they lie in the flood plains of rivers.

2. Karewas soil:This kind of soil are lacustrine deposits found as low flat mounds or elevated plateaus in the valley of Kashmir and Kishtwar and Bhaderwah tracts of Jammu division. Karewas are coarse in the flanks of Jhelum and finer towards the central part. The soil is extremely productive due to the availability of proper irrigation facility. This soil is popular for cultivation of saffron and apples. Some alluvial soil are found in the bank of the Sind river, but mostly mountainous soils are found in different areas of Ladakh.
