Question

Give a brief description of an activity to demonstrate that matter is composed of very small particles.

Accepted Answer

Aim:- To demonstrate that particles of matter are very small.

Materials required:- 6 test tubes in test tube stand, a clean dropper, few crystals of potassium permanganate, water, strips of white paper and pen.

Procedure:-

i. Paste white strip on the test tube and number them. Arrange the test tubes with a mouth up in the test tube stand based on their increasing numbers.

ii. Add 10 ml of water to the first test tube and 9 ml of water to rest of the test tubes.

iii. Dissolve few crystals of potassium permanganate in test tube 1. The solution of test tube 1 turn purple colour.

iv. Add 10 drops of solution from test tube 1 to test tube 2 with the help of a clean dropper.

v. Similarly, add 10 drops of solution from test tube 2 to test tube 3 and repeat this to other test tube and observe.

Observations:-

i. Purple colour is deep in test tube 1.

ii. When we add solution from test tube 1 to 2, the colour of the solution in test tube 2 becomes lighter.

iii. As the dilution increase from test tube number 2 to 6, the intensity of purple colour diminishes.

Conclusion:- When crystals of potassium permanganate are added to water, it breaks down into large number of smaller particles which is spread in water and forms purple colour solution. On diluting this solution, the colour of the new solution also purple. From this experiment, it is concluded that matter is made up of a large number of very small particles. These particles uniformly distribute themselves between the space of the water molecule.
