The lymphatic system of man comprises the lymph, lymphatic capillaries, lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes.

Lymph:

The colourless, water-like liquid connective tissue is known as the lymph. It bathes the cells and gets collected in lymphatic capillaries.

It is composed of carbon dioxide and metabolic wastes. It lacks RBCs, platelets and some plasma proteins.

Lymphatic capillaries:

The thin-walled vessels present in all the tissue spaces that are interwoven with the blood capillaries, but are not connected with them are known as the lymphatic capillaries.

These are wider than the blood capillaries and are lined by the endothelium of the thin and flat cells.

Lymphatic vessels:

The lymphatic capillaries unite to form larger tubes called lymphatic vessels that have thinner walls and numerous valves to prevent backflow.

The thoracic duct or the left lymphatic duct and right lymphatic duct are the two main vessels.

The thoracic duct that receives lymph from the left side of the head, neck, chest, left upper extremity and the entire body below the ribs is the main collecting duct of the lymphatic system.

As the lymphatic vessel coming from the intestine contains absorbed fats, they appear milky, which are known as lacteals.

The lymph from the upper right side of the body is drained by the right lymphatic duct.

Lymph nodes:

These small, oval or bean-shaped bodies placed in the course of lymphatic vessels are known as lymph nodes.

They are found everywhere in the body but are maximum in neck, armpit and groin.

They serve as filters by removing the bacteria, foreign material and cell debris.

They also contain lymphocytes and immunoglobulins secreted by B cells called antibodies.

The excess tissue fluid from the extracellular spaces are drained back into the blood by the lymphatic system.
