Give an experiment to prove that carbon dioxide is released during breathing.

Aim: To prove that carbon dioxide is released during breathing.

Materials required: Lime water (aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide), test-tube, cork with a small hole and a bent glass tube.

Steps:

Take some freshly prepared lime water in a test tube.

Fix the mouth of the test-tube with a cork so that it cannot come in contact with the air.

Push the glass tube through the small hole in the cork and make sure the end inside dips into the lime water.

Now blow your breath into the tube. The breath will bubble through the lime water.

Observation: After sometime you will find that the lime water turns milky and loses its transparency.

Conclusion: When carbon dioxide is passed through lime water it turns milky. The lime water turns milky when we breathe the exhaled air from lungs into the test-tube. This test, thus proves, that the air exhaled out during breathing contains carbon dioxide in it. Lime water is colourless.
