Methods of preparation of primary amine:

1. When vapours of alcohol and ammonia are passed over a dehydrating catalyst such as thoria or alumina at $300 ° C$ , a mixture of primary, secondary and tertiary amines is formed.

$R - OH + H - {NH}_{2} \to_{300 ° C}^{{ThO}_{2}} {RNH}_{2} + H_{2} O$

2. The action of bromine on acid amides in an alkaline solution produces an amine containing one carbon atom less than the number present in the amide. This reaction is called as Hoffmann bromamide reaction. It is used in degradation of carbon chain.

${RCONH}_{2} + {Br}_{2} + 4 KOH \to R - {NH}_{2} + 2 KBr + K_{2} {CO}_{3} + 2 H_{2} O$

Reaction of primary amines with ${CHCl}_{3}$ in presence of alcoholic $KOH$ :

Primary amines on heating with chloroform and alcoholic caustic potash give isocyanides (carbylamines) with very unpleasant odour. This is known as carbylamine reaction.
