What are the monomers of Buna-S rubber?

Buna-S is a copolymer containing two different monomeric units namely styrene and butadiene. It is a synthetic rubber prepared by using sodium as a catalyst.

Give one use of high density polythene (HDP).

High Density Poly Ethylene (HDPE) is a thermoplastic polymer made by the polymerisation of ethene using Ziegler Natta catalyst. As one of the most versatile plastic materials around, HDPE plastic is used in a wide variety of applications, including plastic bottles, milk jugs, shampoo bottles, bleach bottles, cutting boards, and piping.

Mention the structural difference between thermoplastic polymer and thermosetting polymer.

The major structural difference between the mentioned polymers is that the thermoplastics have secondary bonds between molecular chains. Thermosetting plastics have primary bonds between molecular chains and held together by strong cross-links. Examples of thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers are polythene and Bakelite respectively.

Classify the following as addition polymer or condensation polymer. Bakelite.

Condensation Polymerisation or Step Growth Polymerisation: This type of polymerisation generally involves a repetitive condensation reaction between two bifunctional or trifunctional monomeric units. Example: Bakelite.

Classify the following as addition polymer or condensation polymer. Teflon.

Addition polymer: In this type of polymerisation, the molecules of the same monomer or different monomers add together on a large scale to form a polymer. Example: Teflon.

Explain the term copolymerisation and give one example.

Copolymerisation is a polymerisation reaction in which a mixture of more than one monomeric species is allowed to polymerise and form a copolymer. For example, a mixture of buta–1, 3–diene and styrene can form a copolymer.
