Give two precautions to be taken while measuring the length of a pencil using a scale.

While measuring length, we have to take the following precautions to get the correct measurement of length.

a) Placement of scale: The scale should be placed with the object along its length. The scale should not be placed at an angle.

b) Worn-out ends: Sometimes due to repeated use, the scale may be worn out, and the zero mark may not be seen. In some cases, the scale may be broken from the ends. In such cases, we have to measure from any other mark on the scale and then subtract that value from the reading on the other end.

Note: Here the reading is taken from $1 cm$ mark. The other end is at $5.5 cm$ . Therefore, the length of the card is $5.5 cm - 1 cm = 4.5 cm$ .

c) Position of the eye: The correct position of the eye is very important for taking the measurement. Our eyes must be focussed exactly above the endpoint of which we are taking the measurement.

Note: Position $X$ is the correct position of the eye. $X$ gives $4.5 cm$ which is the actual measurement whereas $Y$ gives $4.6 cm$ and $Z$ gives $4.4 cm$ which are wrong values.
