Soil nutrients can be replenished by adopting the following methods:

By applying fertilisers: Fertilisers that are rich in nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are added to the field depending on the requirement of crops and the soil. Examples: urea, superphosphate, potassium nitrate, and potassium sulphate.

By adding manure: Manure is obtained by the decomposition of cattle dung. It supplies essential nutrients and humus to the soil and makes it fertile.

By adding compost: Compost is made by the decomposition of biodegradable waste by microorganisms. Compost is organic manure that enriches the soil and hence, it is added to the field to replenish the loss of nutrients.

By growing leguminous crops (crop-rotation): Leguminous crops plants such as peas and beans live in a symbiotic relationship with Rhizobium bacteria. Rhizobium bacteria live in the roots of these plants and convert atmospheric nitrogen into plant-usable form. The plants in return provide food and shelter to the bacteria. Farmers need not apply nitrogenous fertilisers in the field if leguminous crops are grown.
