The process of the hydrological cycle starts within the oceans. Water in oceans gets evaporated because of heat energy provided by Sun and forms water vapour. The water vapour moves upwards to higher altitudes forming clouds. These clouds condense and precipitate in the form of rain, hail, snow, sleet. Some part of clouds move towards the land by winds. Precipitation causes the clouds to fall onto the ground and even there some part of it evaporates back to the atmosphere.

The portion of water that reaches the ground, enters the earth’s surface infiltrating various layers of soil and enriching the moisture content and enhance the water table. Trees and plants send a part of the water from the earth’s surface back to the atmosphere through the method of transpiration. Once water penetrates the earth’s surface, runoff is created over the land, flowing through the contours of land heading towards rivers and lakes and eventually joins into oceans. Some quantity of water is maintained underground in the form of ground table storage. This cyclic method continues and has been occurring for billions of years on Earth.
