Photosynthesis is the process in which carbon dioxide and water are converted into glucose and oxygen in presence of sunlight. Below are the steps performed to prove that photosynthesis requires sunlight.

(i)Keep a potted plant in dark for 24-48 hours,

(ii)Cover one leaf of the plant with black paper, now keep the plant near sunlight.

(iii)Leave the experimental set-up for 6-8 hours.

(iv)Pluck the leaf which was covered and a normal leaf from the plant.

(v)Now perform the starch test for the leaves.

Observation: The leaf which was covered by the black paper shows a negative result, whereas the normal leaf shows a positive test for starch, i.e indicating the presence of starch.

Conclusion: The leaf which was covered by the black paper was not able to carry out photosynthesis due to the absence of sunlight, but the normal leaf was exposed to light and carried out the process.
