Buddhism is one of the most popular religions of the world. Since its inception, it travelled to different lands, thanks to pilgrims, monks, and travellers. A lot of events and steps took place that led to the spread of the religion:

(i) Ashoka, the Mauryan emperor, sent his son and daughter to Sri Lanka to spread the religion.

(ii) Kanishka, the Kushan king, also dispatched missionaries to Central Asia. He spread the Mahayana branch of Buddhism and promoted the veneration of Lord Buddha statues and idols. This religion gradually made its way from Central Asia and to China and Japan. The growth of the Silk Road led to a rise in Buddhist pilgrimage.

(iii) The Chinese travelers Fa-Hien and Hiuen Tsang came to India to study and gather valuable Buddhist literature.
