Infectious diseases are caused by pathogens which can spread from one person to another. The microbes can spread through air containing the germs, through food contaminated by germs, through contaminated water, vectors like insects and animals, direct physical contact or through sexual contact. For example, inhaling droplets released into the air due to coughing or sneezing by a person suffering from common cold, can infect us with the disease. The bite of the female Anopheles mosquito spreads malaria. AIDS is a disease of the immune system which is sexually transmitted.
