In the laboratory process for the preparation of ammonia, ammonium chloride is heated with slaked lime or quick lime to give ammonia.

$2 {NH}_{4} Cl + CaO \to {CaCl}_{2} + 2 {NH}_{3} + H_{2} O 2 {NH}_{4} Cl + Ca {(OH)}_{2} \to {CaCl}_{2} + 2 {NH}_{3} + 2 H_{2} O$

Ammonia is a reducing agent. When passed over heated copper oxide, metallic copper, nitrogen and water vapour are produced.

$3 CuO + 2 {NH}_{3} \to 3 Cu + N_{2} + 3 H_{2} O$

With an insufficient amount of chlorine, ammonia produces nitrogen and hydrochloric acid. Hydrochloric acid reacts with ammonia producing ammonium chloride.
