A neuron receives a chemical signal from another neuron or from a sensory receptor. This stimulus opens ion channels in the membrane of the neuron allowing sodium ions to flow into the cell. The influx of sodium ions makes the inside of the neuron more positive which is called depolarisation. Depolarisation triggers the opening of another set of ion channels allowing potassium ions to flow out of the cell. The outflow of potassium ions makes the inside of the neuron more negative again which is called repolarisation.

The depolarisation and repolarisation of the membrane create an electrical impulse that travels down the axon of the neuron. The electrical impulse reaches the axon terminals where it triggers the release of neurotransmitters. The neurotransmitters bind to receptors on the next neuron which causes the next neuron to generate an electrical impulse. This process continues until the electrical impulse reaches the brain or spinal cord, where it is interpreted, and a response is generated.

The parts of a neuron that help the nerve impulse to travel towards the cell body are the dendrites.
