The process of sorting things on some basis and grouping them is called classification. Arranging and classifying things in groups helps us to identify them easily, locate them without delay and study their properties conveniently.

On the basis of arrangement of molecules, matter is mainly classified into three states. They are:

Solids- In solids the molecules are very tightly packed. They have fixed shape and volume. Example- wood.

Liquids- In liquids the molecules are not very tightly packed. They have fixed volume and but not fixed shape. Example- water.

Gases- In gases are away from one another. Gases do not have a fixed shape, size or volume.

On the basis of conduction of heat and electricity the materials are classified into conductors and insulators.

Conductors- These materials have the ability to allow the electric current to pass through them. Example- copper, aluminium, etc.

Insulators- These materials do not allow the electric current to pass through them. Example- air, wood, etc.
