Each kidney has millions of nephrons which are surrounded by a network of blood capillaries. They filter the blood and produce urine. Urine is a straw-coloured fluid. It contains approx 95% water. It also contains urea, uric acid; ammonia, and mineral salts.

Formation of Urine: The renal arteries bring impure blood to the kidneys. From the renal artery, the blood passes into the glomerulus. The blood gets filtered in the glomerulus. They filtrate the excess water, urea, glucose, amino acids, and some salts. The filtrate then moves down to the tubule.

As the filtrate moves down the tubule, some useful substances, like sugar, amino acids, salts, and water, are reabsorbed by the blood. The blood that leaves the kidneys is pure. It does not contain any waste. It contains the right amount of water and other useful substances. This pure blood is carried back by the renal vein to the body The remaining fluid is called urine. The urine that is formed in the kidneys is sent to the urinary bladder through the ureters. When the bladder is full, the urine is removed from the body through the urethra.
