There are two broad categories in which the sources of Indian history can be divided - Archaeological and Literary. They can be further subdivided into certain categories.

Archaeological sources include monuments, epigraphical inscriptions, engravings, paintings, coins, and other material sources.

Some important examples of archaeological sources are - paintings in the caves of Ajanta and Ellora; Temples such as Virupaksha, Brihadeshwara, Meenakshi, etc; epigraphical sources such as Junagarh inscription, Allahabad pillar inscription, Pillar Edicts of Ashoka, etc; monuments such as Taj Mahal, Red Fort, Humayun Tomb, Safdarjung Tomb, Qutub Minar, etc.

Literary sources include the various autobiographies, biographies, written documents belonging to various rulers or dynasties, and the foreign accounts of travelers.

Some important literary sources include Baburnama, Ain-i-Akbari, Kitab-ul-Rehla, Tabqat-i-Nasiri, Indica, Arthasastra, etc.
