A cell is the basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms. It is also the smallest unit of life. It can be as small as 0.01 micrometres as in Mycoplasma or it can be as large an ostrich's egg. Unicellular organisms such as bacteria and Amoeba are so small that they can only be seen through the microscope (it was made by Robert Hooke). Although these cells are small, they can exist on their own and can perform all the metabolic reactions necessary to survive.
