Two bulbs rated $100 W$ , $200 V$ and $25 W$ , $200 V$ are connected in parallel to a $200 V$ supply. What will be the current drawn from the supply line?

In a household electric circuit, appliances are connected in parallel because

(i) the potential difference across each appliance is same.

(ii) if one appliance gets defective then other appliances are not affected.

The current in the bulb $100 W$ , $200 V$ is

$I_{1} = \frac{P_{1}}{V_{1}} = \frac{100}{200} = 0.5 A$

The current in the bulb $25 W$ , $200 V$ is

$I_{2} = \frac{P_{2}}{V_{2}} = \frac{25}{200} = 0 .125 A$

Since the two bulbs are connected in parallel, the current $(I)$ drawn from the supply gets divided into the bulbs. Therefore, the current $(I)$ drawn from the supply line is given by,

$\begin{array}{l} I = I_{1} + I_{2} \\ = 0 .5 + 0 .125 \\ = 0 .625 A \end{array}$
