of barium. Show that these figures verify the law of constant proportions.

In the first experiment:

The mass of barium sulphate is $= 1.288 g$

The mass of barium is $= 1.03 g$

So, the mass of sulphur present is $= 1.288 - 1.03 = 0.258 g$

Hence, the percentage of sulphur present in ${BaSO}_{4} = \frac{0.258 \times 100}{1.288 g} = 20.013 % ≃ 20 %$

In the second experiment:

The mass of barium sulphate is $= 3.672 g$

The mass of barium is $= 2.938 g$

So, the mass of sulphur present is $= 3.672 - 2.938 = 0.734 g$

Hence, the percentage of sulphur present in ${BaSO}_{4} = \frac{0.734 \times 100}{3.672 g} = 20 %$

In both the experiments, the percentage of sulphur is same.

Hence, it is verified that these figures verify the law of constant proportions. This law states that in a chemical substance the elements are always present in a definite proportion by mass irrespective of its sources.
