Ordering of Words in a Sentence

Reordering words requires the student to rearrange words to form a grammatically correct and meaningful sentence.

Some common rules are:
1. The subject is placed before the verb.

2. In general, the adjective is placed before the noun it qualifies.

3. Adjectives are usually not placed between two nouns. In order to communicate a clear meaning, it is placed close to the noun it modifies.

4. Adverbs are generally placed before the verb or adjective it modifies.

5. Adverbs are generally placed before the second auxiliary verb when there are two auxiliary verbs. For example, “This problem would never have arisen, had corruption been tackled early on”.

6. The direct object must not be separated from the verb associated with it. For example, “Ram was able to write, with this pen, very easily” is incorrect. The correct order would be “Ram was able to write very easily with this pen”. In some cases, the sentence would not convey the intended meaning, and in other cases it would make the sentence grammatically incorrect.

7. The sentence should follow a logical train of thought without forcing the reader to reinterpret midway.
