Accepted Answer

The speed through which water passes down through column of soil is called percolation rate of water. But it is different for different types of soil, For example:- sandy soil has high percolation rate whereas clay soil has low percolation rate.

There is a relation between percolation rate and the absorption/retention of water by different types of soil as soil with high percolation rate holds water for lesser amount of time whereas soil with low percolation rate holds water for longer time i.e. they have more moisture.

Water holding capacity and percolation rate depend mainly on the size of the soil particles. In clay size of soil particles is small hence its water holding capacity is high and the percolation rate is low. On the contrary in sandy soil particle size is large and the space between particles is large. Hence, the percolation rate is high but water holding capacity is less.
