The arrangement of particles in different states of matter is different and this tells us about their other properties such as shape and volume as well. In the given picture, Fig. 1 cannot be contained in an open vessel, as it is in gaseous state. As the interparticle force is less, it can flow freely and cannot be contained in an open vessel. Gases do not have a fixed shape or volume and its molecules are loosely packed.
