There are three lists enumerated in the Indian Constitution that delegates the governmental powers between the state and the union government. Among the subjects mentioned in the state list, law and order occupy an important position. Law and order refer to the maintenance of peace and security in the states by the state government. The state governments usually use their police force to protect the law and order of the state. However, this does not affect the national or internal security of the Indian nation. This is because, in a holding together federal country like India, the union has more power compared to the state. The union government has the power to dismiss any state government in case of internal or external security issues.

The external threat usually occurs to the states that are present at the borders of a nation. In such cases, cooperation with the union will be fruitful to the states. Thus, the centre will always have the ultimate control over the nation's security.
