The Indian democracy has faced several challenges over time. Some of these challenges are:

Illiteracy: Lack of education is a major challenge faced by the Indian democracy. The literacy rate in India has improved since independence. However, $25 %$ of India's population remains uneducated. A literate citizen not only exercises their rights but also learns about the problems and demands of a country.

Poverty: Since independence, the Indian economy has made considerable progress. However, poverty concentrated in five Indian states serves as a major challenge to the Indian democracy. Approximately $50 %$ of the poor live in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal and Odisha.

Corruption: In India, corruption is prevalent in three stages; among politicians, bureaucrats and industrialists. The problem of corruption affects different levels of government.

Caste and Gender-based discrimination: The constitution ensures caste and gender-based equality. However, the patriarchal caste system acts against the ideas of democracy.

Nonetheless, the constitution has made several amendments to fight the challenges that are being faced by the Indian democracy.
