Contraceptive methods help in avoiding unwanted pregnancy. No form of birth control is free of side effects, but the IUD (intrauterine device) have the least side effects compared to the other methods. An IUD is a device inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy.

1. Natural methods of contraception avoid chances of the meeting of sperms and ovum. Periodic abstinence: In this method, couples avoid coitus from day 10 to 17 of the menstrual cycle when ovulation could be expected. This period is also called as fertile period as the chances of fertilization is very high during this period. Coitus interruptus: In the method, the male partner withdraws the penis from the vagina just before ejaculation to avoid insemination. Lactational amenorrhoea: The menstrual cycle and ovulation do not occur during intense lactation and so the chances of pregnancy are low. This method is effective only upto six months after childbirth. 2. Barrier methods of contraception are used to prevent the physical contact of sperms and ovum. Condoms: The barriers which are made of thin rubber latex sheath to cover the penis or vagina in males and females respectively are called condoms. These also help to prevent the spread of sexually transmitted diseases. Condoms trap and prevent the ejaculated semen from entering the vagina. Diaphragms, cervical caps and vaults: Diaphragms, cervical caps, and vaults are made up of rubber and are inserted into the female reproductive tract to cover the cervix before the coitus. These are chemical barriers of conception which are reusable.
