Musical instruments

Musical instruments such as nathaswaram, shehnai, trumpet and instruments like megaphone, loudspeakers and horns are designed to send sound in a particular direction without spreading it in all directions.In these instruments, a tube followed by a conical opening reflects sound successfully to guide maximum amount of sound from the source towards the audience.

Stethoscope

It is a medical instrument used to hearing the sound produced in the body. In stethoscope, the sound reaches the doctor's ears after multiple reflections which occurs in connecting tube due to which sound can be heard by the doctor clearly.

Use of sound in animals

Animals such as bats, dolphins, rats, whales and oil birds, use echolocation, an ultrasound technique in which the location of the object is identified with the help of reflection of sound waves. Echolocation allows bats to navigate through dark caves and find insects for food.

SONAR

SONAR stands for SOund Navigation And Ranging. Sonar is a device which uses ultrasonic sound waves to measure the distance, direction and speed of underwater objects. Sonar consists of a transmitter and a detector at the bottom of boats and ships. The ultrasonic waves produced by transmitter travels through the water and after striking the object on seabed, gets reflected back and sensed by the detector. The detector converts the ultrasonic waves into the electrical signals for easy analysis.

Electrocardiogram (ECG)

It is one of the oldest and simplest method of cardiac investigations available. In an ECG, the sound variation produced by the heart is converted into electrical signals. Thus, an ECG is the representation of electrical signals produced by cardiac muscles with respect to time and these signals can be printed on a paper for analysis.
