Cells of cork are dead at maturity.

These cells are compactly arranged.

Cells do not possess intercellular spaces.

Cells possess chemical substance suberin in their walls.

They are several layers thick.

Cork is impervious to gases and water.

When the roots and stem grow older with time, their outermost tissue is transformed into a specialised protective tissue called cork. Cork cells have no intercellular spaces and are dead. Its wall is thickened due to the deposition of suberin.

Role of cork is as follows:

It protects the internal tissues and prevents water loss.

It provides insulation against heat and cold.

It provides mechanical strength.

Lenticels present in the cork provide aeration to the inner tissues.
