Organisms that can not be seen through our naked eyes is called micro-organisms. Though we cannot see the surrounding micro-organisms, we are aware of its presence because of their actions like spoiling our food and causing diseases. Thus, some micro-organisms are useful and some are harmful to us. They spoil the food and also cause diseases in humans, animals, and plants. The diseases like the common cold, malaria, skin infections, typhoid, etc are caused by the action of various types of micro-organisms. Food spoilage occurs by the growth of bacteria and fungus.

Characteristics of microbes:-

Apart from being invisible to unaided human eyes, microorganisms also have some other characteristic features.

• They can survive in extreme environmental conditions such as extreme heat or cold which may seem inappropriate for human beings. They form a hard outer covering called a cyst, which protects them from harsh conditions. They remain inactive inside the cyst.
• They may occur as a single cell or found together in clusters called colonies.
• They can be beneficial or harmful to us.
