Food is prepared in the green leaves of the plant by combining carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight and chlorophyll. During the process of photosynthesis, the following three steps take place:
(i) Absorption of sunlight energy by chlorophyll: Chlorophyll in the leaves of the plant trap sunlight. The plant utilises visible light only which is made up of seven colours and the green colour is least absorbed. It has a wavelength of 390-760nm. Light has two major functions:
a) Photolysis of water to produce oxygen, protons, and electrons, and
b) Excitation of chlorophyll to emit electrons.

(ii) Conversion of light energy into chemical energy and splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen using light energy: The sunlight is absorbed by chlorophyll and converted into chemical energy in the form of NADPH2 and ATP. Electrons and protons help in producing NADPH2 and ATP. The splitting of water into hydrogen and oxygen using light energy is called the photolysis of water.

(iii) Reduction of carbon dioxide to form carbohydrates using chemical energy: Glucose is the end product of photosynthesis. It is formed by the reduction of carbon dioxide.
