Lungs are the primary respiratory organs in terrestrial animals. Given below are three characteristics of lungs that make them efficient for respiratory exchange:-

1) Large surface area- Lungs have many tubes which finally carry the inhaled air into sac-like structures called alveoli. It is the site for gaseous exchange, and it increases the surface area for absorption of oxygen.

2) Moist and thin walls- Alveoli are thin-walled as they are made up of a single layer of cells. It is also moist which helps in the quick diffusion of gases.

3) Extensive blood supply- Alveoli are surrounded by a network of blood capillaries. The oxygen diffuses from the alveoli into capillaries is then transported to the heart by the pulmonary veins. On the other hand, the carbon dioxide from the tissues is carried into the lungs for getting released out with the exhaled air.
