Look at pictures A and B and say if what you see is a physical or a chemical change. Give reasons for your answer.

In picture A, there is a physical change that takes place as the egg is broken, but the original composition of the egg is not altered. A change in which a substance undergoes a change only in its physical properties such as state, shape, size or colour, etc., is called a physical change. The chemical composition of the matter remains unchanged during a physical change, so no new substance is formed.

In picture B, there is a chemical change that takes place. A change in which new substances are formed due to the occurrence of chemical reactions is termed a chemical change. Boiling egg is a simple method of cooking the egg. Cooking involves a number of chemical reactions. The egg turned into a new compound, it involves a change in the composition, taste, odour, etc., and that can not be reversed to the original form. A permanent change takes place. So, it is a chemical change.
