An object is said to have translational motion when all parts of the object move the same distance in a given time. This kind of motion can be categorised into two kinds, rectilinear motion and curvilinear motion.

An object is said to be in linear or rectilinear motion, if it moves from one position to another along a straight line in one direction only. Train moving on a straight track is an example of rectilinear motion.

If all parts of an object move along a curved path in a given time, then the object is said to have curvilinear motion. The ball thrown upwards at an angle after travelling some height comes down. Thus, it is having curvilinear motion.

The motion that does not repeat itself at regular intervals of time is called non-periodic motion. Movement of a bee is random motion as it moves unpredictably and it is also non-periodic in motion.

f. Motion of the pendulum of a clock - i. Periodic motion

A motion that repeats itself after regular intervals of time is called periodic motion. Motion of the pendulum of a clock is periodic motion. The revolution of the earth around the sun is also an example of periodic motion.
