The transfer of energy and nutrients from one organism to another organism in a sequential interlinking pattern is known as the food chain. Each step in a food chain is known as a trophic level. In a food chain, the flow of nutrients and energy takes place from one organism to another. The examples of four food chains in different ecosystems are given below:

Example of the food chain in the grassland ecosystem: Green plants $\to$ Deer $\to$ Tiger. The producer is the green plants which are taking energy from the sun and manufacture their food. Deer is a primary consumer (herbivore) that eats grass (producer), and a tiger is a secondary consumer (carnivore) that eats deer.

Example of the food chain in the pond ecosystem: Algae $\to$ Insects $\to$ Small fish $\to$ Large fish. The producer is algae that take energy from the sun and manufacture its food. Insects are a primary consumer that eats small fish, and large fish is a secondary consumer that eats small fish.

Example of the food chain in the garden ecosystem: Flowers $\to$ Caterpillars $\to$ Sparrows $\to$ Eagles. The producer is the flowers of the plants which are taking energy from the sun and manufacture their food in the process of photosynthesis. Caterpillars are the primary consumer that eats flowers (producer). Caterpillar is a herbivore (that eats plants). Then caterpillars are eaten by the sparrows which is a secondary consumer, and eagles are a tertiary consumer that eats the sparrows.

Example of the food chain in the lake ecosystem: Phytoplankton $\to$ Fish $\to$ Snakes $\to$ Hawks. The producer is phytoplankton that takes energy from the sun and manufactures its food. Fish are a primary consumer that eats phytoplankton and snakes are a secondary consumer that eats fish. Then the snakes are being eaten by the tertiary consumer the hawk.
