Bacteria are unicellular prokaryotes, that lack a well-defined nucleus and other membrane-bound organelles. Some bacteria are beneficial and some are harmful to us. Some beneficial uses are as follows:

In medicine: Antibiotics are prepared from secretions of microorganisms which are selectively toxic. It can be produced from bacteria and fungi e.g., penicillin, and streptomycin.

In agriculture: Some bacteria maintain soil fertility while others enhance it by fixing nitrogen. Nitrogen-fixing bacteria like Azotobacter and Clostridium live free in the soil and fix atmospheric nitrogen. Rhizobium bacteria live symbiotically with the root systems of leguminous plants and fix atmospheric nitrogen.

In industry: The diary industry solely depends on bacteria. Souring and curdling of milk are done by lactic acid bacteria (Lactobacillus) for production curd, cheese.

Decay and decomposition: Soil bacteria are important to us because they cause decomposition of the organic matter. The dead bodies and organic wastes liberated by the organisms (both of plants and animals) are decomposed by saprophytic bacteria.
