Mention four salient features of Bacteria.

Bacteria have the following characteristic features -
(i)They are the smallest known cellular organisms in the living world.
(ii) Generally they are unicellular but sometimes certain bacteria may be united to form a filament.
(iii) Bacterial cell surrounded by a cell wall.
(lv)They are mostly heterotrophic (eg. Naesseria) but a few may be autotrophic (e.g. Chlorobium.)
(v) The bacterial cell is without chlorophyll, hence they are heterotrophic.
But certain bacteria like Rhodospirillum, Rhodopseudomonas, etc. possess chlorophyll in their cell called bacteriochlorophyll. Due to the presence of that pigment, they can prepare their food matters by the process of photosynthesis, hence these types of bacteria are autotrophic.
(vi) They do not possess a true nucleus; the nuclear membrane and nucleolus are absent within the nucleus. Only one spiral DNA fibril is presently called a bacterial chromosome. DNA is not associated with protein.
(vii) They are devoid of mitochondria, Golgi bodies, endoplasmic reticulum, chloroplasts, etc.
(viii) Bacteria can take only liquid food matters.
(ix) Mitotic process of cell division is absent within the bacterial cell.
(x) Bacteria mainly reproduce using binary fission.
