The biochemical process during which energy is released in stages as chemical bonds are broken in steps is called respiration. It can take place with or without the involvement of oxygen. Depending on the presence or absence of oxygen it takes place, it is categorized into two types i.e., Aerobic Anaerobic Respiration that takes place in the mitochondria of the cell in the presence of oxygen is called aerobic respiration. It is the characteristic feature of eukaryotic cells when they have sufficient oxygen. Aerobic respiration is a mode of respiration during which oxygen is taken in and carbon dioxide is liberated. This process takes place in the mitochondria of the cell of most of the living organisms. Glucose is completely oxidised to produce carbon dioxide, water, energy. The overall reaction of aerobic respiration is: C 6 H 12 O6+6O 2 →6CO 2 +6H 2 O+686 kcal The rate of aerobic respiration varies with the oxygen concentration. It also varies with temperature to a certain limit. It is inversely related to the concentration of carbon dioxide. Other factors like water, light, inorganic salts, etc., also affect the rate of respiration. When 1 mol. (180 g) of glucose reacts with oxygen under standard conditions 36 ATP's are synthesised. It is equivalent to 686 kcal of energy.
