The three raw materials used in the production of iron from its ore are sinter, coke and limestone.

The blast furnace consists of three different zones.

Hot air is blown from the bottom and coke is burn to yield temperatures up to $2200 K$ . Burning coke provides the majority of the heat required for this process. At such high temperatures, Coke reacts with the oxygen in the hot air to form Carbon monoxide $(CO)$ .

The $CO$ and heat now move upwards and meet the raw material running down from the top. The temperature in the upper parts of the Blast Furnace is considerably lower than $2200 K$ at the bottom. In this part, Haematite and Magnetite are reduced to Ferrous oxide.

Reactions in the Blast furnace at $873 K$ ,

$2 C + O_{2} \to 2 CO {Fe}_{2} O_{3} + 3 CO \to 2 Fe + 3 {CO}_{2}$
At $1273 K$ , the silica is converted into slag

${CaCO}_{3} \to CaO + {CO}_{2} CaO + {SiO}_{2} \to {CaSiO}_{3}$

At the $1573 K$ region, sponge iron melts and dissolves carbon, phosphorus, silica, etc. The slag also fuses. The molten mass collects at the base of the furnace. The slag floats over it. The molten iron is taken out as required. This iron is called pig iron.
