The different types of chromatography are :
(a) Adsorption chromatography
(b) Partition chromatography

Adsorption chromatography: This type of chromatography is based on the principle of differential adsorption. Different solutes are adsorbed to different extent on the stationary phase. Adsorption chromatography is further classified into two types:
(i) Column chromatography
(ii) Thin layer chromatography (TLC)

Partition chromatography : In this type of chromatography, separation of components takes place by continuous differential partitioning of the components between the stationary and mobile phases. In this technique, a special quality paper, Whatman paper number $1$ , is used. The water trapped in the fibres of paper acts as a stationary phase. The mobile phase rises by the capillary action. On the basis of the different partition coefficient, the different components get separated. Partition chromatography is further classified into two types:
(i) Liquid-liquid Chromatography
(ii) Gas-liquid Chromatography
