The four main pillars of human development are the concepts of equity, sustainability, productivity and empowerment.

Equity: Equity is providing equal access to opportunity to all people irrespective of any biased ness. It is the understanding that a certain level of discrimination is required to bring up the extremely underprivileged. For example, reservations are made for the underprivileged section of the society to uplift and provide them with the opportunities that they were deprived of for many years.

Sustainability: Sustainability is using resources in the present without compromising the need of the future generation. It is making the opportunities available for both the present and future. Overutilisation of resources will lead to the deprivation of opportunities for future generations. For example, excess mining will exhaust the resources and hence the opportunity for the future generation to indulge in mining activity will be stripped. Hence, the resources must be utilised sustainability.

Productivity: This is expressed in terms of human work. Productivity needs to be constantly enriched to build capacity in people. To achieve this, a better quality of education and health facility is required to maintain a standard consistency in the labour force that will further help to enhance productivity.

Empowerment: This is one of the vital steps while attaining development. Empowerment is very important in a country like India where there is much discrimination and people are often deprived of their rights and opportunities to display their capabilities. It implies the decision-making power or the power to make choices. These powers come when the freedom and capacity of the people are enhanced, for which good policies and good governance are required.
