The process of conversion of atmospheric nitrogen to ammonia is called nitrogen-fixation. Nitrogenase is the most crucial enzyme found in root nodules for nitrogen fixation. Yes, a special pink coloured pigment called Leghemoglobin is required for the functioning of nitrogenase. Nitrogenase is highly sensitive to oxygen. Leghemoglobin acts as oxygen scavenger and thus creates anaerobic conditions in the root nodule of a legume to protect nitrogenase.
