Budding is a method of asexual reproduction in which the parent body develops an outgrowth called a bud. The bud grows in size and ultimately separates as a new individual. In various plants, stems get modified to perform different functions. Bulbs are specialised underground stem that bears roots on their lowers sides and rosette of leaves on the upper side. These are very short underground stems with fleshy bulb scales. These scales are modified leaves that serve as sites of food storage. As the plant grows and develops from the center of the scale cluster, it gets its nutrient from the scale. Example: Onion.

Some artificial methods of vegetative propagation are cutting, grafting, layering, and tissue culture. In grafting, the detached shoot system part of one plant (scion) is inserted into the root system (stock) of another plant. Scion and stock are firmly tied together and establishes a vascular connection. This method produces the desired varieties of plants. It is common in plants such as mango, guava, apple, and pear.
