The three major functional regions of the cells are the plasma membrane, the cytoplasm and the nucleus.

Plasma membrane: It is the lipid bilayer that seperates the internal environment of the cell from the external environment. It is a semipermeable membrane that regulates the movement of particles both inside and outside the cell, is also involved in cell signalling.

Cytoplasm: The gel-like substance of the cell in which all the organelles lie is known as the cytoplasm. It is one of the major functional region of the cell as most of the cellular activities and metabolic pathways take place in the cytoplasm. During cell division it divides through the process of cytokinesis.

Nucleus: It is a double membraned cell organelle that encloses the genetic material of the organism. Hence it regulates all the cellular activities and is thus known as the control unit of the cell. During cell division it divides by the process of karyokinesis.
