Translational motion

Rectilinear motion: Rectilinear motion is a motion of a particle or object along a straight line. The motion of a car on a straight road and the motion of an elevator within a building are examples of rectilinear motion.

Curvilinear motion: It is a type of translatory motion in which the path followed by the object is not a straight line. Ball thrown at an angle falls to the ground after making a curvilinear path. Water in rivulets make curvilinear motion.

Periodic motion: The motion of objects which repeats after a regular interval of time. Examples: Motion of simple pendulum, the motion of moon around Earth.

Rotational motion: Rotational motion is the motion where an object spins or rotates about an axis. In rotational motion, a different part of the object moves with different speed, but they all complete one cycle in a fixed time. Motion of the wheels of vehicles and motion of the ceiling fan are examples.

Circular motion: Motion of an object in through the circumference of a circle is called circular motion. For example, if a ball is tied to the end of a string, and the string is whirled round and round, the ball moves in a circular path. We then call such a motion as a circular motion.
