The length of a curved line can be measured using two methods.

Using a thread or Using a divider.

Using a thread:

a. Make a knot at one end of the thread. Place the knot at the beginning of the line and press it with your forefinger.

b. Place a small portion of the tread along the line. Press the other end of this portion with the other hand at the point shown in the figure.

c. The thread between your two fingers has the same length as portion AB of the line. Now place the first finger at point B and repeat the above procedure. In this way trace the entire length of the curved line using the thread. Mark the thread where it touches the end of the line.

d. Now stretch out the thread on a metre scale and measure the marked portion. The length of this portion would be the length of the curved line.

Using a divider:

a. Open out the divider so that its legs are apart, say $5 mm$ .

b.Place one of the legs at one end of the line, put the other on the line as shown in the figure below.

c.Take the divider along the line and count the number of steps in which it covers the entire length of the line. Now the length is calculated as follows:

Total length = (number of steps x distance between the legs of the divider) + Length of the leftover segment.
