Newton's first law of motion states that, a body continues to be in a state of rest or in a state of uniform motion along a straight line, unless some external unbalanced force is applied on the body to change that state.

Daily when we travel in a bus, we are pushed forward when the bus stops and pushed backwards when the bus starts to move. This is because, our lower body moves with the bus but the upper body tries to maintain its state and is thus pushed forward or backward.

Also, we can clean a carpet just by beating it with a stick. When we beat a carpet with a stick, the carpet comes in motion but the dust particles tend to stay in the state of rest and thus gets removed from the carpet.
